What are 10-Free Low-Toxic Nail Products and why should you care?

In the world of nail care, prioritising health and wellness is key. Traditional nail products often contain harmful chemicals that can be absorbed by our nails and skin, posing risks to our overall well-being.

At GojiSpa, we believe in offering nail services that not only enhance beauty but also promote health. That’s why we exclusively use 10-free, low-toxic nail polish brands, such as Bio Sculpture® and Lola Lee. These brands are free from a variety of the 10 most harmful chemicals commonly found in most nail products. They are also vegan-friendly and cruelty free.

Many conventional nail products harbour toxic chemicals that can wreak havoc on our health. These chemicals include:

  1. Formaldehyde: This known carcinogen (cancer causing ingredient), commonly used as a nail hardener, can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. Prolonged exposure has been linked to respiratory issues and increased cancer risks.
  2. Toluene: Employed as a solvent for smooth nail polish application, toluene inhalation can induce headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Long-term exposure may lead to neurological damage and reproductive issues.
  3. Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP): While enhancing nail polish flexibility, DBP has been associated with hormone disruption and reproductive problems, which is particularly concerning for pregnant women and young children.
  4. Camphor: Despite imparting a glossy finish, camphor may trigger skin irritation and allergic reactions. Inhalation of high levels can result in dizziness, confusion, and nausea.
  5. Formaldehyde Resin: Derived from formaldehyde, this compound is utilised in nail products to boost adhesion and longevity. However, it can still emit formaldehyde vapour, posing similar health risks.
  6. Ethyl Tosylamide: Often added to nail polish for durability and flexibility, ethyl tosylamide has been associated with antibiotic resistance. Concerns arise from its potential to contribute to the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
  7. Xylene: Used as a solvent in nail polish formulations, xylene exposure can cause headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Prolonged or high-level exposure may lead to more severe symptoms, including neurological issues and respiratory problems.
  8. Parabens: Employed as preservatives to extend the shelf life of nail products, parabens have been linked to hormone disruption and potential health risks, particularly when absorbed through the skin.
  9. Triphenyl Phosphate (TPHP): Often added to nail polish as a plasticizer, TPHP has raised concerns due to its potential endocrine-disrupting properties. Research suggests that TPHP may interfere with hormone regulation, posing risks to reproductive health and development.
  10. Benzophenone-1: Used in nail polish as a UV filter to prevent color fading, benzophenone-1 has been flagged for its potential to mimic estrogen in the body, raising concerns about its impact on hormonal balance and health.
